Prologue - Kym lost a wheel on Power's Lookout stage on day 1 and were lucky not to roll (inc link to video on YouTube Moh racing ch) The Wheel ended up 40m into heavy scrub luckily the Ralliart support crew found it and with some borrowed parts got it going again for the second and final day. Our stage finishes ranged from 10th to 23rd and with the help of co driver Matt Heskin, Kym took many seconds off last year's stage times. Prologue - After four days of tearing up the tarmac, the Messages On Hold Evo’s time at Targa Tasmania 2011 came to a spectacular – albeit premature – conclusion. After blitzing a left 4.5 at 190km/hr during the Riana Stage, Kym and Kirrilee found themselves 35 metres off course in a boggy paddock. The car took on some medium damage but thankfully both driver and navigator walked away with only minor aches and bruises.

Prologue - Kym Illman paired up with navigator Stirling Hamersley in the 2010 Targa Tasmania rally. Driving his red 2006 EVO 9, Kym was excited at the prospect of 5 full days of racing. "It's been 5 months since I last competed (2009 Classic Adelaide) and whilst Antonia Spiers won't be navigating for me in this event, I'm delighted to have convinced Stirling Hamersley to sit beside me for the ride." Kym said.1. Videos of Kym and Stirling's exploits at the 2010 Targa Tasmania have since been uploaded onto YouTube. Prologue - Qualified 12th fastest of the 31 starters in the modern competition category even after navigator Toni Spiers got lost on the notes after organisers amended starting point and threw in 2 changes to route at last minute Day 1 - Nearly crashed out about 12 corners in on first leg (see youtube for SS1) but rescued it. Welded the clutch plate to the fly wheel at start of 2nd stage but luckily freed it 30seconds later. Rest of day went well and we finished 22nd of 31. Day 2 - Temperatures reached 43c thank god we had air con. Slow and steady saw us rise to 19th by day's end Day 3 - Soggy conditions through Adelaide hills and we recorded our best result, 11th on one of the wet twisty stages. Worked our way up to 12th by mid afternoon then slipped to 15th as roads dried out. Nearly came off on one stage, fish tailing and cleaning up a road side post. Day 4 - Slipped to 17th with 2 stages to go as the faster cars lapped up the high speed flowing roads. Welded clutch plate again on 2nd last stage and couldn't free it. Had to sit on a corner for 30mins until we managed to start it in gear and finished the 5 minute stage in 43mins using only second gear. Last stage was cancelled and we limped back to the finish line to receive our finishers medal. We achieved our goal and although slipped to the bottom of the finishers both Toni and I loved every minute of it. |
Targa West (Perth) - Aug 20 - 23, 2009 |
| Mitsubishi EVO 9 Driver: Kym Illman - The Message Group Executive Chairman Navigator: Toni Spiers |
21st Place |

Kym Illman and Toni Spiers piloted the Messages On Hold EVO 9 to a credible 21st place out of 53 in the 2009 Quit Targa West. The pair won the Challenge Modern Category (speed limited to 130km/hr) last year in a Porsche 997 turbo. In 2009 they stepped up to the Modern Competition category which saw the pair record speeds of around 200k/hr on several stages. After 4 cars slid off the track at Prologue Illman and Spiers took it easy and registered a time that saw them start from 38th position. Friday August 21st was the first full day of competition and the day started badly when Illman/Spiers ended up bogged in the infield at RAC Driving Centre and lost a minute to the field, putting them in last position. After special stages Kalamunda, John Forrest and Zig Zag the pair had climbed back to 33rd. Day two saw the field head off to Muchea, Bindoon and Toodyay in some of the most persistent rain in the event’s history. On several stages Illman and Spiers were skating through pools of water several centimetres deep but despite the treacherous conditions, they managed to keep the car straight and finished the day in 26th position. Sunday, day 3, saw a return to fine weather. Throughout the 10 stages around Muchea, Bindoon and Toodyay, the pair gained confidence in both the car and their abilities finishing the event in 21st place against some of the most talented tarmac rally drivers in the country.
